DOT Issues Grants to States for Pipeline Safety Call Centers

Centers Support the National 811 ‘Call Before You Dig’ Hotline

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration issued just over $1 million in One Call grants today to support states’ safe digging call centers in an effort to reduce pipeline digging accidents.

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will join safety advocates and business leaders at a press conference on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, to urge the public to avoid preventable pipeline accidents by calling 811 before they dig. The national 811 toll-free telephone number should be used by anyone prior to digging so that underground pipelines and other utilities can be marked and thus avoided during construction, landscaping and other excavation projects.

  Rescue workers had to pull 3 University of Minnesota Crookston students from the Red Lake River in the dark last night, after they paddle past their stopping point and became lost in the dark. They were not in danger of drowning.
